#20. the road home
---
There are no stars.
He blinks slowly, head tilted upwards towards the darkness, and dull eyes taking in that vast expanse of nothing they call the sky. There isn’t a single speck of white littering the sea of velvet, and he wonders, in his momentary lapse of consciousness, if he is to blame for their disappearance. He grimaces and shakes the thought off because it is stupid and he knows that the clouds are just being a little too selfish to let the stars (fake or not) peek out tonight.
The dry breeze slaps against his face as he walks onwards, long coat rustling past tired, throbbing legs. There isn’t enough air in his lungs and his chest feels as though it is constricting, crushing already fractured ribs that lie beneath scarred skin.
He forces himself to go on anyway because he hasn’t made dinner yet and it is already well past midnight.
There are a few more beats of silence before Hei feels suddenly aware of soft, delicate fingers wrapping themselves around his rough, calloused ones. He's caught off guard, and he turns his head a little too sharply to face the petite girl that has been struggling to keep up with his long strides.
“Hei,” Her voice is small, like always. Distant, but not quite dead. And Hei finds himself softening his gaze when she blinks up at him with hooded eyes.
“Was I walking too fast?” He inquires, voice quiet and kind. He tries to hide the pain that is stabbing at his side with a small smile. A smile he only shows to her.
Yin only nods once, but he feels his already rumbling stomach clench when he sees her eyes, emotionless as they may be, convey something akin to worry. Hei isn’t sure. But he smiles for her again even though he knows it isn’t much of an assurance... But this is how he tells her that he appreciates the concern.
He takes a hold of her hand (which previously had itself wrapped around his) and pulls her close. Hei bends over a little to press his lips against her hair because it is the one kiss he is capable of doing at the moment.
“Let’s go.”
She nods, and they walk once more. Hei feels the corner of his lips tug upwards when he hears not only one set of footsteps, but two.
The road home is a long one, but at least he is not alone.

NOTES: Now, now, I know that Hei may have smiled a little too much in this drabble, but I believe that buried beneath that brooding, badass, external shell of his, he is still capable of showing gentleness to the person he loves (see: Ryuusei no Gemini OVA trailer).
